Cellular Gateways
Industrial Gateways for Cellular IoT and M2M Connectivity
Industrial gateways sit between cellular infrastructure and the connected devices, sensors, and equipment of industrial deployments. Unlike full-scale routers built for office-grade connectivity, industrial gateways are engineered for the protocol bridging, environmental tolerance, and unattended operation that industrial sites require.
Millbeck supplies industrial gateways across multiple vendor partners and form factors, with UK stock and the technical guidance to specify the right gateway for each deployment. Whether you’re building a smart metering rollout, a multi-site industrial monitoring estate, or a large-scale LoRaWAN sensor network, our team can match the gateway to the deployment requirement.
In short: Millbeck stocks industrial gateways across four categories. Compact M2M gateways (Teltonika TRB140, TRB141, TRB142, TRB145, TRB160) for small-footprint protocol bridging deployments. Multi-interface industrial gateways (Teltonika TRB246, TRB256, Robustel R-series) for dual-SIM and complex I/O requirements. 5G industrial gateways (Teltonika TRB501 with 3GPP Release 16 and 2.5 Gbps Ethernet, plus the TRB256) for high-bandwidth applications. LoRaWAN cellular gateways (Milesight UG65, UG67, UG63, plus Robustel LG-series) for wide-area sensor aggregation. All gateways support remote management at scale and pair with Millbeck IoT SIMs and industrial antennas for complete deployment.
Compact M2M Gateways
Compact M2M gateways suit deployments where a single connectivity task needs to be performed reliably in a small footprint, often with limited power budget. The Teltonika TRB series provides the typical entry point.
TRB140 is the cost-effective Ethernet variant: 4G LTE Cat 4 connectivity (up to 150 Mbps), Gigabit Ethernet port, Micro-USB data and power, RutOS firmware with full VPN and firewall support, RMS integration, 64.5 x 74.5 x 25mm aluminium housing, and -40°C to +75°C operating range.
TRB141, TRB142, TRB143, TRB145 add specific industrial interface variants for legacy equipment integration: RS-232 for serial device bridging, RS-485 for industrial bus protocols, and combinations with digital I/O for sensor input integration. These are the typical choice for retrofitting cellular connectivity to existing industrial equipment that lacks native networking.
TRB160 adds LTE-M (Cat-M1) and NB-IoT (Cat NB1, NB2) connectivity alongside dual-SIM functionality and 450 MHz band support for utility deployments. The deep-penetration capability and low power consumption suit smart metering, remote sensors, and solar-powered installations where every milliamp of battery life matters.
All TRB compact gateways run RutOS, the same operating system that powers Teltonika’s full router range, allowing integration into a single Teltonika RMS console across mixed estates.
Multi-Interface and Dual-SIM Industrial Gateways
For deployments that need more interfaces, dual-SIM resilience, or extended I/O, the multi-interface gateway category provides a step up from the compact form factor.
Teltonika TRB246 is the typical mid-range industrial gateway: 4G LTE Cat 4, dual-SIM with auto-failover (weak signal, data limit, SMS limit, roaming, no network, network denied, data connection fail switching), one Gigabit Ethernet port, RS-232, RS-485, two configurable digital I/O lines, 16-pin terminal block, support for industrial protocols including Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, DNP3, and DLMS, RutOS, RMS integration, -40°C to +75°C, IP30 aluminium housing.
Robustel R-series industrial routers provide an alternative gateway approach with similar capability profiles. The R3000 series remains widely deployed for cost-effective M2M applications. The R5020 5G flagship adds 5G connectivity for higher-bandwidth requirements. The R-series runs RobustOS with VPN (IPsec, OpenVPN, GRE, L2TP, PPTP, DMVPN), dual-SIM failover, firewall, and integration with Robustel’s RCMS (Remote Cloud Manager Service) for centralised remote management.
The choice between Teltonika and Robustel multi-interface gateways depends on the specific deployment requirements: management ecosystem (RutOS/RMS or RobustOS/RCMS), specific interface requirements, and integration with the wider connectivity stack.
5G Industrial Gateways
5G industrial gateways extend the gateway category into 5G-specific applications: high-bandwidth video, low-latency industrial control, and the next generation of 5G IoT deployments.
Teltonika TRB501 is the current 5G flagship in the gateway category, replacing the TRB500 (which entered end-of-life in November 2025 with end-of-ordering on 3 May 2026). The TRB501 delivers 5G Sub-6GHz SA/NSA connectivity with 3GPP Release 16 carrier aggregation, download speeds up to 2.4-3.4 Gbps, upload speeds up to 900/550 Mbps, and a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port for ultra-fast wired connections. Built-in eSIM support alongside the Nano SIM slot. Support for industrial protocols including Modbus, DNP3, and DLMS/COSEM. VPN protocols including OpenVPN, IPsec, WireGuard, and ZeroTier. Compatible with cloud platforms including ThingWorx, Cumulocity, Azure IoT Hub, and AWS IoT Core. IP30 aluminium housing.
Teltonika TRB256 provides 5G NR connectivity in a different form factor for specific application requirements where the TRB501’s full performance profile is not required.
For 5G applications requiring the lower power consumption and cost profile of 5G RedCap rather than full 5G, the Teltonika Calyx 5G RedCap (HAT+ form factor for Raspberry Pi) and select RUTC series routers are alternative options outside the gateway category.
LoRaWAN Cellular Gateways
LoRaWAN gateways serve a different deployment pattern from cellular-only gateways: they aggregate data from large numbers of low-power LoRaWAN sensors over a wide area, then backhaul that aggregated data over cellular to the cloud or on-premises platform.
Milesight UG65 is the indoor semi-industrial LoRaWAN gateway, supporting up to 2000 LoRaWAN end devices with 8 channels using the SX1302 LoRa concentrator and a quad-core processor. Backhaul options include Ethernet, 4G LTE, and Wi-Fi. Coverage extends up to 2km in urban environments and 15km line of sight. BACnet/IP support enables direct integration with Building Management Systems for smart building deployments.
Milesight UG67 is the outdoor IP67-rated equivalent, supporting 2000+ nodes with the same 8-channel architecture and quad-core processor. The IP67 housing suits smart city, smart agriculture, and large-scale outdoor industrial sensor network deployments. Multiple backhaul options (Ethernet, cellular, Wi-Fi) with failover support continuous network operation.
Milesight UG63 is the compact mini LoRaWAN gateway for small-scale deployments or as a coverage supplement to fill blind spots in larger networks. Lightweight 8-channel design with dual backhaul options.
Robustel LG5100 provides the cellular-backhauled LoRaWAN alternative within the Robustel range, combining LoRaWAN aggregation with global 4G/3G/2G cellular backhaul. The R3000 LG-OG provides an IP67 outdoor variant.
For organisations standardising on a single LoRaWAN ecosystem, Milesight’s product range and integration depth make it the typical choice. For organisations already running Robustel infrastructure, the LG5100 fits cleanly into the existing RCMS management workflow.
Outdoor and Specialist Gateway Variants
For deployments where the gateway needs to sit outside cabinets or in harsh environments, outdoor and specialist gateway variants address scenarios where standard indoor gateways are not appropriate.
Teltonika OTD series combines routing electronics and high-gain cellular antennas in a single IP-rated outdoor unit. Eliminating the antenna cable run between the indoor router and the rooftop antenna reduces signal loss and simplifies installation. Suited to rural sites, coastal locations, and urban rooftops where indoor-mounted gateways with external antennas would be operationally awkward.
Robustel R3010 elevator gateway is purpose-built for vertical transportation applications, with the form factor and certifications suited to lift industry installations.
Robustel R3000 LG-OG IP67 outdoor LoRaWAN gateway combines outdoor cellular backhaul with LoRaWAN sensor aggregation in a single weatherproof unit.
For deployments with specific environmental, certification, or form factor requirements not covered by standard gateways, our pre-sales team can specify alternative products from the wider Millbeck portfolio.
Choosing the Right Gateway
For most projects, the right gateway category is clear from the deployment context. Some general guidance:
Choose a compact M2M gateway when: the deployment needs single-purpose protocol bridging, the form factor and power budget are constrained, the application uses Ethernet, RS-232, or RS-485, and 4G LTE Cat 4 throughput is sufficient.
Choose a multi-interface gateway when: the deployment requires multiple interfaces (Ethernet plus serial plus I/O), dual-SIM resilience, or DNP3/DLMS protocol support for SCADA and utility applications.
Choose a 5G industrial gateway when: the application requires high-bandwidth (HD video, real-time multi-stream data), low-latency (industrial control, edge AI), or future-proofing against 5G evolution.
Choose a LoRaWAN cellular gateway when: the deployment aggregates many low-power sensors over a wide area, the application uses LoRaWAN end devices (smart metering, environmental monitoring, asset tracking), or the smart building integration requires BACnet/IP.
Choose an outdoor or specialist variant when: the deployment context (rooftop, lift shaft, marine, IP67-rated outdoor) requires hardware specifically designed for that environment.
For projects that don’t fit cleanly into one category, our pre-sales team can specify a hybrid approach combining multiple gateway types across different parts of the deployment.
Combining Gateways With the Connectivity Stack
Industrial gateways deliver the most value when paired with the right cellular SIMs, antennas, and management architecture.
Millbeck supplies gateways alongside the rest of the connectivity stack: IoT SIMs (UK roaming for multi-carrier resilience, global roaming for international deployments, eSIM or eUICC for long-life applications, NB-IoT and LTE-M profiles for low-power deployments), industrial antennas matched to the gateway form factor and deployment environment, and the SIM management visibility for fleet-wide operational oversight. For deployments standardising on Teltonika’s RMS or Robustel’s RCMS, we support credit provisioning and onboarding alongside the hardware supply.
For OEMs and integrators building production deployments, we support volume pricing, framework agreements, multi-year supply contracts, and pre-deployment configuration where useful.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is an Industrial Gateway?
An industrial gateway is a cellular communication device that bridges between industrial equipment (PLCs, sensors, meters, control systems) and the cloud or back-office systems that monitor or control them. Industrial gateways differ from office routers in their environmental tolerance (typically -40°C to +75°C operating range), industrial protocol support (Modbus, RS-232, RS-485, DNP3, DLMS), unattended deployment design, and long operational life. Common form factors range from ultra-compact single-purpose gateways through multi-interface industrial gateways to specialist outdoor and 5G variants.
What Is the Difference Between a Gateway and a Router?
The distinction is sometimes blurred but generally: routers focus on bringing internet connectivity to a network of devices (typically with multiple Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi, and IT-grade features), while gateways focus on bringing connectivity to specific industrial equipment, often translating between protocols (cellular to Modbus, cellular to RS-485, cellular to LoRaWAN). Many modern industrial products span both functions, but gateways tend to be smaller, lower-power, more interface-specific, and designed for unattended deployment in industrial environments.
Should I Choose a Cellular Gateway or a LoRaWAN Gateway?
The choice depends on the deployment topology. For deployments connecting a small number of devices directly to cellular (a single PLC, a few smart meters, a CCTV camera), a cellular industrial gateway is the right choice. For deployments aggregating large numbers of low-power sensors (hundreds to thousands of LoRaWAN end devices), a LoRaWAN gateway with cellular backhaul is the right approach. The two categories often coexist in the same deployment: cellular gateways for direct equipment connections, LoRaWAN gateways for sensor aggregation.
What Is 5G RedCap and Why Does It Matter for Gateways?
5G RedCap (Reduced Capability, sometimes called NR-Light) is a 5G NR variant designed specifically for IoT applications. It delivers most of 5G’s improvements (lower latency, better coverage, network reliability) at a fraction of the power consumption and cost of full 5G modems. For industrial gateway applications, RedCap enables 5G’s benefits in deployments where full 5G’s bandwidth is overkill and the power profile matters (solar-powered installations, battery-backed sites, dense IoT networks). Currently the Teltonika Calyx 5G RedCap (HAT+ form factor) and select RUTC routers offer RedCap; expect RedCap availability to extend across the gateway range as the technology matures.
Has Teltonika TRB500 Reached End-of-Life?
Yes. Teltonika announced the TRB500 end-of-life on 3 November 2025, with end-of-ordering on 3 May 2026, end-of-production on 3 November 2026, and end-of-support on 3 January 2031. The TRB501 is the direct replacement, adding 3GPP Release 16 carrier aggregation, a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port, native eSIM support, and native SCADA protocol support. For new 5G gateway deployments, we recommend the TRB501; for existing TRB500 estates, support continues through to January 2031, allowing planned migration to the TRB501 or alternative 5G hardware.
What Industrial Protocols Do Millbeck Gateways Support?
Across the Teltonika and Robustel gateway ranges, supported industrial protocols include: Modbus (TCP and RTU), DNP3, DLMS/COSEM, BACnet/IP (on selected Milesight LoRaWAN gateways), MQTT, OPC UA on selected models, and the standard serial protocols over RS-232 and RS-485. For deployments with specific protocol requirements, Millbeck can confirm exact support against the deployment specification and the gateway model.
Does Millbeck Stock the Full Gateway Range?
Millbeck holds UK stock of the most widely deployed gateway products across Teltonika (TRB140, TRB141, TRB142, TRB145, TRB160, TRB246, TRB256, TRB501, OTD series), Robustel (R3000, R5020, R3010, LG5100, R3000 LG-OG), and Milesight (UG63, UG65, UG67) ranges.
