Security infrastructure has the same job whether it is protecting a shopping centre, a construction site, or a remote substation: see what is happening, record it, control access to it, and respond when something goes wrong. Every one of those jobs depends on a connection that works.

The problem is that most security systems are installed on whatever network happens to be at the site. Shared broadband, a venue IT team’s guest network, or a single-carrier SIM chosen on price. It usually works. Until the moment it doesn’t, which tends to be the same moment it matters most.

Here is how we think about the four connectivity problems that cost security operators the most time, money, and reputation, and what a connectivity layer designed for security actually looks like.

The Availability Problem

A CCTV feed that drops for six hours overnight is not a minor inconvenience. It is a gap in the evidential record, a blind spot during the time of day crime is most likely, and a phone call to a customer the next morning. Access control that fails during a shift change is not an IT issue, it is staff locked outside.

Single-carrier SIMs and fixed broadband lines are the two most common root causes. Carriers have outages. Fixed lines get cut. Both happen, and when they do, the security system is offline until someone notices and someone else fixes it.

The Deployment Speed Problem

Security is often deployed under time pressure. A construction site that started groundworks yesterday. A vacant building the insurer has required monitoring on. A festival opening in three weeks. A new retail unit that needs CCTV operational before the soft launch.

Waiting six to twelve weeks for a fixed line to be installed is rarely an option, and even when it is, the cost of civil works frequently makes it uneconomic. Many sites never justify a dedicated fixed connection.

What works instead: cellular 4G and 5G connectivity that deploys in the time it takes to power on a router.
