The RUTM51 is supplied with everything you need to get connected – just add SIM card and power – a little configuration may be required if you are using an IoT SIM / M2M SIM card but for standard SIM cards it should automatically recognise the SIM and auto connect. If your SIM provider has given you specific APN settings then you should log into the RUTM51 web interface and browse to network>WAN?Mob1s1A1 and edit this and set to manual APN configuration and enter your provided APN settings.

RUTM51 - Frequently Asked Questions
The Teltonika RUTM51 supports multiple types of connectivity to provide reliable and flexible networking:
5G Mobile Network: Supports high-speed 5G Sub-6 GHz connections with both standalone and non-standalone modes, delivering very fast download and upload speeds.
4G LTE and 3G Fallback: Compatible with 4G LTE Cat 12 and 3G networks to ensure continuous connectivity where 5G is not available.
Ethernet: Five Gigabit Ethernet ports (one WAN and four LAN) for wired network connections.
Wi-Fi: Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) supporting multiple users, mesh networking, and fast roaming features.
Dual SIM Slots: Two SIM card slots with automatic failover to maintain mobile network connection without interruption.
Digital Input/Output: Interfaces for integration with industrial sensors and control equipment.
Remote Management: Supports cloud-based remote monitoring and configuration.
Together, these connectivity options make the RUTM51 suitable for industrial, enterprise, and remote applications requiring fast, stable, and secure internet access.
The dual SIM failover on the Teltonika RUTM51 allows the router to automatically switch between two SIM cards to maintain continuous mobile connectivity. You can configure the router to switch SIMs based on a variety of conditions, ensuring that if the primary SIM encounters a problem, the secondary SIM takes over seamlessly.
Key features of the dual SIM failover:
Automatic SIM Switching: The router can automatically switch from one SIM card to the other if certain conditions are met.
Configurable Conditions: You can set rules for SIM switching, such as:
Weak signal: Switches if the signal strength drops below a specified threshold.
Data limit: Switches if the mobile data quota for the current SIM is exceeded.
SMS limit: Switches if the SMS sending limit is reached.
Roaming: Switches when roaming is detected.
No network: Switches if no network is detected.
Network denied: Switches if the network is denied.
Data connection fail: Switches if the mobile data connection fails.
SIM not inserted: Switches if the current SIM is not inserted.
Check Interval and Count: The router checks for these conditions at a user-defined interval and can be set to confirm the condition multiple times before switching.
SIM Idle Protection: The unused SIM remains idle until a switch is triggered, protecting it from unnecessary use.
Manual Control: You can also manually select which SIM to use or set up operator preferences for each SIM.
This flexible failover system ensures that the RUTM51 maintains a stable and reliable mobile connection, even if one SIM or network becomes unavailable.
Yes, you can manage the Teltonika RUTM51 remotely, and it includes a comprehensive suite of security features.
Remote Management Options:
Teltonika Remote Management System (RMS): A cloud-based platform that allows you to monitor, configure, and manage all your Teltonika devices from a single interface, even if the router does not have a public IP address. RMS provides real-time monitoring, configuration changes, automated firmware updates, and custom alerts.
Web Interface (WebUI): Secure remote access via HTTPS for configuration and monitoring.
SSH: Secure command-line access for advanced configuration and troubleshooting.
SNMP, TR-069, MQTT, Modbus, JSON-RPC: For integration with third-party monitoring and management systems.
SMS Control: Execute commands and receive status updates via SMS, useful for remote or unattended sites.
Security Features:
Built-in Stateful Firewall (SPI): Protects against unauthorised access and common network threats.
VPN Support: Multiple protocols including OpenVPN, IPsec, WireGuard, L2TP, PPTP, and DMVPN for secure remote connections.
Wi-Fi Security: WPA2-Enterprise, WPA3, client isolation, and Protected Management Frames (PMF).
User Authentication: Supports pre-shared keys, digital certificates, X.509 certificates, TACACS+, and RADIUS (internal and external).
Attack Prevention: DDoS protection, port scan prevention, SSH/HTTP/HTTPS attack prevention, and time-based login blocking.
Access Control: Flexible rules for SSH, WebUI, CLI, and Telnet; IP and login attempt blocking.
Web Filtering: Blacklist and whitelist controls for website access.
SSL Certificate Management: Supports Let’s Encrypt for automated certificate generation.
VLAN and Network Segmentation: Port and tag-based VLAN separation for network isolation.
These features ensure that the RUTM51 can be securely managed from anywhere and provides robust protection for your network and data.
The USB port on the Teltonika RUTM51 is a standard USB A interface designed for connecting a variety of external devices. You can use it to attach external storage devices such as USB flash drives and external hard drives, enabling file sharing or network-attached storage (NAS) functionality. The router supports multiple file systems, including FAT, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS (read-only), ext2, ext3, and ext4.
In addition to storage, the USB port allows you to connect other peripherals such as a USB modem, printer, or USB-to-serial adapter. This flexibility makes it suitable for expanding the router’s capabilities in industrial and enterprise environments, supporting tasks like local data backup, device integration, or providing additional connectivity options.
If your RUTM51 is installed indoors where the 4G and 5G signal is reduced compared to outdoors then you can install an outdoor 4×4 MiMo 5G antenna.
We have a dedicated page to this topic which provides information about the various antennas we can provide to suit your installation.
